We have developed a genetic test that can tell you how many copies of the Ridge allele are present in your dog. You can read the peer-reviewed publication describing the work here.
A dog with one or two copies of the Ridge allele will have a ridge. A dog with two copies of the Ridge allele will produce offspring with a ridge, regardless of his/her mate’s appearance. On the other hand, a dog with one copy of the Ridge allele may produce ridgeless pups if he/she is mated with another dog with one copy of the Ridge allele.
Prior to the development of this test, breeders could not determine if a particular dog has one or two copies of the Ridge allele.
This test is now available for the public to purchase. The cost is $130 for analysis of a single dog. If multiple samples are sent in simultaneously, the cost is $104 per test (a 20% reduction).
Once we have your order, we will send you a sample collection kit. A swab is used to collect your dog’s saliva. Once we receive the returned kit, a completed order form and the fee, we will process the samples and send you the results of the analysis via email. In most cases, results will be available within two weeks of receipt of samples.
If you would like to request this service, please email me: waldoj@newpaltz.edu . Make sure to indicate:
* the number of samples you would like to collect
* an address at which you can receive US mail delivery
Right now I cannot process orders from outside the US–though I hope to have this available soon–if you are interested in purchasing a test and reside outside the US, please email me and I’ll let you know as soon as I have things set up.
